This proposal is in response to ROSES 2009, NASA NRA NNH09ZDA001N, A.14 Precipitation Science, category 2.1, subtopic 1.1.2, Algorithm development and validation. The thrust of this proposal is directed towards developing algorithms to retrieve snowfall rates from single and dual-wavelength Ku- and Ka- band radars proposed for the GPM mission. A secondary goal is to evaluate ongoing GPM snowfall active and passive algorithm activities using a novel, objective approach, to help GPM researchers improve their snowfall retrieval algorithms. As an option, we propose to take a leadership role in the microphysical observations planned for the NASA MC3E field campaign tentatively scheduled for April/May 2011. We have collected airborne in-situ observations of ice particle size distributions, shapes and masses from field programs spanning Arctic through tropical locations. These experiments were mostly organized and funded by NASA. A number of instances have been coordinated with multi-wavelength radar observations. New representations of snow fallspeeds based on unreported observations at the ground have been developed by us and will be used in the analysis. These databases will be used for our proposed research.
