Atmospheric Composition

There are two components to this NASA New Investigator Program proposal. The first component is to improve understanding of observed and modeled midlevel clouds in the context of broader scale atmospheric processes. My objectives in this project are to: (1) Determine midlevel cloud characteristics from observations over four months in three regions sampling the annual cycle in the tropics and the continental and maritime midlatitudes; and (2) Compare the observed characteristics to those produced by the NASA GISS GCM. I will use synthesized datasets from four NASA A-train instruments (AIRS, CloudSat, CALIPSO, and MODIS) to characterize midlevel clouds and to compare the characteristics to those from the climate model. The proposed research paves the way for future studies on global midlevel cloud characteristics and radiative impacts and has the potential to lead to improved representation of midlevel clouds in GCMs and more accurate satellite-based retrievals of midlevel cloud properties. This works addresses NASA Earth science objectives pertaining to global water and energy cycles and climate system predictive capabilities. The second component is develop and deliver a teacher enhancement program on Earth's water and energy cycles to support the newly required Texas high school capstone science course in Earth and Space Sciences. I will develop and lead a set of workshops to educate Texas high school earth science teachers about the current state of atmospheric and climate science and help them integrate existing NASA educational materials into the new course. Texas is the second most populous state and the proposed efforts have the potential to impact thousands of science teachers and over 200,000 high school students per year. These efforts address several of NASA's education goals including drawing on the compelling context of Earth system science to support teacher professional development and promote student achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
