Atmospheric Composition

We propose to put two instruments on NASA's WB57F aircraft, a small ice detector probe (SID-2) and the NCAR video ice particle sampler (VIPS). This combination of probes will provide high quality size distribution and crystal shape information in sizes from about 1-50 microns (SID-2) and 10 to 200 microns. As an option, we propose to launch balloon-borne ice crystal replicators from the DOE/ARM Cloud and Radiation Testbeds (CART) site to support the MACPEX observational component. Following the field program, we propose to address basic MACPEX science questions and to collaborate with MACPEX investigators and to work on the development of algorithms for retrieving ice cloud properties from satellites.
