We will incorporate water tracer diagnostics into the GEOS5 data assimilation. These will enhance the evaluation of the water and energy cycle evaluation of MERRA, but providing additional water vapor transport information. We are leveraging three unique features of GEOS5/MERRA, 1) Incremental analysis updates -which allow control over the analysis, 2) Replay - allows an efficient reproduction of MERRA for additional diagnostics and 3) AeroChem framework - facilitates tracer diagnostics. We will pursue three main lines of research: a. The climatology of water budgets for key regions and the globe, emphasizing moisture transport (Mississippi River, Amazon and Sahel) b. Land atmosphere interactions in MERRA, assessing the coupling strength and impact of local evaporation c. Impact of errors in the water vapor assimilation and uncertainty in evaporation on precipitation. We expect the additional diagnostics will provide a more complete understanding of the MERRA water cycle and land/atmosphere coupling than the standard output. The results will be shared with GEOS5 development, and the tracer code will be made available for the MAP modeling community.
