Research is proposed that will contribute to the definition of the ICESat-II sensor and mission for purpose of advancing laser altimetry studies of dynamic ice sheets. Precise, high spatial resolution ice sheet surface elevation fields (15-m postings and 5 cm accuracy) will be generated from a combination of ICESat-I and Landsat data and used as "ground truth" for surface characterization studies and for the examination of various measurement strategies aimed at optimizing the achievement of the mission objectives of ICESat-II. These studies will be incorporated into the deliberations of the ICESat-II Science Definition Team. The PI will serve as an active member of that group, contributing his knowledge, experience and expertise in ice sheet dynamics.
