Conservation International (CI) has partnered with NASA and Esri to expand and enhance CI’s current suite of near real-time fire and deforestation monitoring systems. The new system, FIRECAST, will deliver email and SMS text alerts of active fires, short-term forecasts of fire risks, and detected deforestation. In tandem, CI’s field offices will engage with local governments, organizations, and private actors to ensure FIRECAST supports fire-related decision-making activities and actions in the field.

This novel early warning system will support national and international policy initiatives addressing climate change adaptation and REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) whose purpose is to promote economic and environmental benefits from forest conservation. The system aims to support in-country needs with expanded monitoring capabilities that support the following activities:
REDD+ project development and implementation
climate adaptation planning
fire-related disaster prevention
protected areas management
policing of illegal activities
allocation of resources for fire control and prevention
dynamic pricing of crop insurance programs
water and crop management decisions
sustainable development actions
