We propose making ozone vertical profile measurements using ozonesondes at seven sites in the tropic and subtropics to provide data for understanding processes in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) region and validation of ozone sensors on several satellite platforms including Aura and the upcoming NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP). Six of the sites are current sounding stations of the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) network. A new site is proposed for Hanoi, Vietnam that will be well-located for studying the impact of the Asian monsoon on the UTLS and Southeast Asian biomass burning. Four of the proposed sites will be directly managed by the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory Global Monitoring Division (ESRL/GMD) at American Samoa, Fiji, the Galapagos, and Costa Rica. For three other sites ESRL/GMD will provide logistical support with ozonesonde supplies (Reunion Island, Indonesia, and Vietnam). In addition the site in Hilo, Hawaii operated by ESRL/GMD, will continue to be included in the SHADOZ network and data made available through the SHADOZ archive at no cost to this proposal. The SHADOZ network emphasizes sharing of resources between those provided by the cooperating agencies operating the ozonesonde stations and those provided through funding from this proposal. The NOAA contribution amounts to funding for one half of the ozonesonde launches at the four sites directly managed through NOAA resources. As the SHADOZ network has developed over the past 10 years growing emphasis has been placed on the significant role that these measurements have played and will play during this proposal period on understanding processes influenced by and responding to the changing composition and climate of the tropical and subtropical UTLS. There will also be a continuing emphasis on coordinating balloon launches for coincidence with satellite overpasses of the ozonesonde stations, support of aircraft based scientific investigations, and timely submission of data to the SHADOZ archive. Results from previous SHADOZ related grants and proposed research during the current period are covered in greater depth in a companion proposal by Anne M. Thompson from Penn State University who is a collaborator on this proposal. These results and proposed investigations will be discussed more briefly in this proposal.
