FAQ: Signing up on the Web Portal

Q: What is the OpenID?

A: OpenID is a single sign-on protocol that lets users register and login to OpenID enabled websites. OpenID allows the user to use an existing account to sign in to multiple websites, without needing to create new username and password.

With OpenID, a user can operate their own OpenID service (such as on their blog), or they can use the services of a third-party OpenID provider (for example, most major Web portals, such as AOL, Google, and Yahoo, now offer OpenID service).

Q: What are the benefits to OpenID?

A: Simplified login reduces the many confusing username/password options users navigate today to a few secure methods standardized across all sites.

Identity portability lets users “carry” the same identity credentials across different websites and services.

Automatic data exchange lets users register at a website or fill out a web form as easily .

Q: Will my OpenID password be shared across websites?

A: With OpenID, your password is only given to your identity provider, and that provider then confirms your identity to the websites you visit. Other than your provider, no website ever sees your password, so you don’t need to worry about an unscrupulous or insecure website compromising your identity.

Q: Will my OpenID be visible to all the members?

A: No. Your OpenID will not be visible anywhere in this website. If you want to make your OpenID visible please edit in your Member profile.

Q: Will I be logged in without asking?

A: The first time you use OpenID to log in to the NEX portal, you will have to explicitly grant access to your OpenID and associate your OpenID with your NEX account.

Q: Where do I get my OpenID?

A: The NEX portal currently uses Google and Verisign issued OpenID credentials. In case of Google, OpenID will be most often your Gmail account and in case of Verisign, it will be your Personal Identity Portal account.

• If you have a Google account, you may look for the sign in with Google button.

• If you have a Verisign account, you may look for the sign in with Verisign button.

Q: What if you do not want to have a Gmail or Verisign account?

A: You can create your Personal Identity Portal account using your University ID and then you can use the PIP URL to sign in and register at sites that support OpenID. To create your Identity Portal account goto https://pip.verisignlabs.com/.

Q: I do not want to communicate with other NEX members through my OpenID account. Can I use my work e-mail for communications?

A: Yes. On the registration page you can provide your work e-mail. You will need the OpenID account only to log into the NEX portal.

Q: I'm registered. Now what?

A: Login with your OpenID. You have to use the same OpenID provider that you provided when registering with NEX.

Q: What if I work at NASA and I do not have an NDC account?

A: If you work at JPL or GISS and do not have an NDC account you can request one or use OpenID. You will have the choice of providing your work email while registering so that you can receive emails to that address, but you will need to use your OpenID credentials for logging in.
